Book Review: The Lurid Sea by Tom Cardamone (2018)

Described as "either the most lyrical filth I've ever read or the most sexually explicit novel of Ancient Rome ever put to paper" how could I not be excited at the release of this Ancient Roman gay merman erotic horror novel? That's five boxes checked before we even get into the fact that it's written by Tom Cardamore author of the anthology Pumpkin Teeth - Which if you haven't checked out you should do so there are some really good stories - although no specifically merman ones there is 'Bottom Feeder' in which rich and bored men turn themselves into manatees.

The Lurid Sea takes its inspiration from the manga Thermae Roma. The story follows son of Neptune Nerities cursed by his father to time-travel back and forth for eternity to a variety of bathhouses around the world where he has to perform oral sex on all the men he finds there. Instead of treating it like a curse however our lusty merman revels in his sexual odyssey. The only downside is that he finds out his half brother (son of Pluto - death) is following in his wake, slaughtering many of his lovers.

The 'merman' content is negligible - despite being a son of Neptune, Nerities doesn't have many merman attributes - he can breathe underwater, hold his breath and has an affinity for language being able to understand all human speech, like his father can understand all the sea creatures. There is a water connection and he is transported by a giant whirlpool/vortex - plus of course his prison is always a bath house. But those of you looking for a fish tail, telepathy or any interesting transformation skills, forget it.

The erotic content of this is repetitive and boring in the extreme - we're told the bathhouses and the men are different eras but essentially they are the same and there is barely any variety - Nerities arrives, sucks off a load of men on to the next - I really wished that there was some variety in the sexual escapades but honestly other than the two times Neptune's involved it's rather dull.

What makes this interesting is the use of classical mythology and the horror element. I love Nerities' back story and the scenes with his unnamed mother are wonderful. I also rather liked Neptune. However the star of the show is his incestuous lover and nemesis, half brother Obsidio - their first sex scene on top of a corpse in a cemetery sets the trend for their twisted relationship and the later half of this novel where Obsidio follows Nerities its a wonderful metaphor for STDS - the linking of sex and death is beautifully handled. I just wish there had been more story and more Obsidio instead of endless repeats of oral sex - we could have had him following early on and this would have made a brilliant horror story.

Overall I was really disappointed with this it had so much potential and draws on such a wealth of Classical mythology and ends up being the erotic adventures of a lusty male sea nymph. I like the fact that this exists, but honestly there are so many other better gay merman novels out there...

3/10

Cover art is Youth & the Dolphin by Felix d'Eon - And fans of gay mermen should check out his work it has a wonderful vintage feel and is choc full of mermen and other mythic creatures - A perfect choice for this novel.

Book Review: Merrow by Louise Cooper (2005)

Book Review: Merrow by Louise Cooper (2005)

Three teenagers; Robyn, Jay and Kieran fail to save a girl from drowning on the Cornish Coast. Kieran starts seeing her everywhere even though he knows she's dead. He believes he is being haunted and becomes increasingly distant and angry towards his girlfriend and best mate. Robyn thinks that the girl might be the Merrow of Cornish legend.

This is a wonderful coming of age YA novel that perfectly captures the elusive nature of the merrow. We never find out one way or the other, nor by the end do we really care, she is a cypher there to help explore the emotions and relationships of the three main characters.

Mermaid enthusiasts are going to be disappointed, this is no H20 or Aquamarine with a fish tailed protagonist, but a far darker story with a somewhat open, bitter ending. I was absolutely hooked by the mystery and thought the punchy writing kept a cracking pace.

Verdict 6.5/10

Short Story - Wet Dreams

Here's a little short story I wrote inspired by my favourite death scene in a horror film possibly ever - A Nightmare on Elm Street IV: The Dream Master - "Swish, killed a fish" where Freddy breaks out of a waterbed. In this case I've given it a mermaid twist. Enjoy!

Wet Dreams

It’s one of those nights; you know the sort, muggy, hot and so damn oppressive that you’re almost praying for the storm to break just so you can get some release from the sticky torment. Even with the window wide open and the covers off, I can’t get to sleep.

I curse knowing that I’ll have dark circles under my eyes in the morning. Rox will never forgive me if I look less than perfect tomorrow. She is determined that now that he’s single again, Jason must want a new girlfriend and that girl should be me.

Jason. The sandy haired, hazel-eyed god of River High, Captain of the football team, lead singer of the school rock-band, king of the social scene and after his spectacular break up with Libby yesterday, currently single...

Nobody could quite believe it. I mean he and Libby had been going steady for months, they were practically engaged! The school’s golden couple, it was a given that they were going to be prom king and queen at the end of the year.

Then suddenly, in the middle of the cafeteria, Libby drops the bombshell that she won’t be going with him to Dave’s eighteenth on Saturday because she needs to revise for Monday’s media exam. This is only the biggest party of the year – Dave is the first of us to turn eighteen. Talk about kiss of death!

“Poor Jason, it’s not like she even left him for someone else!” Rox said to me during our free period. “As if anyone needs to revise for media studies!”

“And that gives him the right to call her a frigid lesbian whore?” I asked raising my eyebrow.

“Well, that might have been a tad extreme,” Rox admitted, “But come on, Jay had a right to be angry. She blew him off in front of EVERYONE! That’s so humiliating!”

“And she’ll be the one going off to uni in September whilst he’ll be forced to retake the year…” I smiled at the thought of perfect Jason needing to resit.

“Just who’s side are you on?” Rox demanded. “You sound like you almost agree with what Libby did!”

“She can’t be both frigid and a whore that’s a tautology,” I mused ignoring Roxy’s indignation.

“Kath, you are such a geek!”

“And that’s why you love me!” I said teasingly. Rox and I have been best friends for years. In most respects we’re polar opposites and yet that only seems to make us like each other more, her extroverted personality perfectly balances my own reserve. Or had, until now.

“You’d better not talk like that in front of Jason,” she warned. “It would be insensitive. After Libby he’s not going to want… well you know…”

“Any show of intelligence. Yeah I get that. But Rox, why would I care what Jason wants?” I asked her.

She looked at me as if I’d just grown another head.

“Well you are going to be his new girlfriend…”

“I am?” I looked at her in astonishment.

“I know I asked you not to show off that brain of yours, but you don’t have to play that dumb!” Rox exclaimed. “You’re next in line, of course you’re going to be Jason’s first choice!”

“Next in line…?” I looked at her blankly.

“Oh come on! After me you’re Libby’s closest friend. Of course it’s going to be you. If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m with Dave I’d make a play for him myself. Jay is such a total stud muffin! It’s a crime for anyone that hot to be single!” I couldn’t help it, I laughed at that and my amusement instantly dissolved the tension between us.

Jason is gorgeous, there’s no denying that, so why aren’t I as ecstatic at the thought of being his girl as Rox obviously is? Switching on the light I grab our yearbook and flip through until I find the picture of him and Libby taken not long after they got together. He looks blissfully happy, arms draped around her in a possessive manner, yet she looks… I don’t know, trapped. Why had I never noticed that before?

My head begins to throb with that kind of ache when your body’s telling you you desperately need to sleep and your mind rebels wanting to uncover those niggling little things that are just tantalisingly out of reach. It’s no use arguing. I drop the book onto the bedside table, switch off the light, this time for good and settle down to sleep.

I toss and turn for a while finally settling on my stomach. Rox thinks it’s weird that I like to sleep on my front, but as I told her it’s more comfortable as I’ve got more padding that way. The waterbed ripples, moulding itself to my curves, its gentle swish lulling me into a trance. Finally I think, finally!

Suddenly I’m jerked out of my doze by a thump to my belly. What the fuck? There it goes again. It’s like the reverse of what I imagine it would be like to be pregnant, kicks and punches coming from the outside... I hold myself perfectly still and the bed begins to ripple around me. Breathing hard I tear at the sheet. And then I see her. Libby? My brain freezes. How is this possible?

But there she is, her naked body mirroring mine, separated only by a thin wall of translucent plastic. She opens her mouth as if to tell me something but only bubbles escape. Frustrated she punches the plastic then unfurls her fingers pressing her palms against the barrier. Instinctively I do the same, staring into her wide sea-green eyes, trying to decipher the hidden message there.

She glances at our palms, almost touching and smiles at me. Like her reflection I find myself smiling back. Her wheat-ripe hair swirls around her like seaweed. She seems so carefree, so happy and seeing her like this I realise that I’ve never really ‘seen’ her before. Not that she’d ever been miserable… but now she just seems to have this… spark.

Something tightens inside me. I want that spark, that indefinable… something desperately. With more strength than I thought possible I break through the plastic and lace my fingers with hers. Tell me, I want to say to her. Tell me what the secret is.

Our bodies crash together and her soft, warm flesh moulds to accommodate mine far more satisfying than impersonal plastic. But rather than letting me go, strong arms wind themselves around me, pressing us closer together. I shiver, but not with the cold. Indeed I’m so hot I feel like my insides are volcanic magma, bubbling, bubbling…

I feel something cold and slimy slap against my thigh. I look down but my eyes can’t fully process what I’m seeing. Slowly my eyes travel upwards from the splayed fin to where the iridescent scales merge with human flesh. Higher… Higher… She looks at me now with unadulterated hunger. Panic beats a frantic tattoo in my chest. I begin to struggle. Her glossy pink lips seize mine in a kiss that is part lust and all possession. I fight harder, jerking my legs caught in the steel vice of her tail. Eyes glittering she draws me deeper.

Down.

Down.

Drown.

The next thing I know it’s morning and mum’s coming into the room with a cup of coffee. She looks at the bed. The cup drops to the floor and coffee splashes across the haphazard rainbow heap of discarded clothes. My eyes stare vacantly up at her from behind their plastic tomb. My naked corpse floats inside the waterbed like some twisted modern art instillation. Mum’s scream is loud enough to wake the dead…

Groggily my uncoordinated hand searches for the alarm clock, desperate to stop its incessant beeping. My heart slows to normal as the world around me swims into focus, everything looking as it should: Clothes in a heap, waterbed solid, not a body in sight. After my hurried shower, I stare into the mirror, apart from appearing perhaps a little paler than normal I don’t look any different. But inside… well that’s another story. Picking out an eye-catching scarlet ensemble that yesterday I never would have dared to wear for school, I dress, readying myself to face the sharks.

Cameo appearance - Rosario + vampire volume 10

Manga - Rosario + Vampire volume 10

Mermaid club president of the swim team Tamao Ichinose, who was last seen having been beaten up by Moka in volume 1, makes a tiny cameo in the final volume of the series. A magic mirror reveals each monster's true form and we get one panel in which we see Ichinose in the mirror:

Anime Episode Review: Rosario + Vampire 1.5

Anime Episode Review: Rosario + Vampire 1.5 "School Swimsuits + vampire"

This is the anime adaptation of the mermaid encounter found in test 3 of the manga.

It follows exactly the same plot - Tsukune wants to join the swim club and the president is an evil mermaid who wants him.

It's gorgeous to see this in colour - we get her green hair and orange tail which is a nice reversal of Ariel. And of course their personalities are polar opposite as well.

The anime also makes a little more of the other mermaid members of the team.

So our evil mermaid attacks Tsukune:

Moka dives in to rescue him and the girls fight. Moka turns into her super vamp alter-ego and trounces the mermaid in a mid air fight. Again, really loving the use of colour - the pool become red like blood.

Moka is victorious and we get this nice scene, not seen in the manga, of the defeated mermaid caught in a net.

Short and sweet. Evil mermaid monster overcome, not much more to say really - except we never see her legs in the anime, she's always in the water.

verdict: 6/10

Manga Review: Rosario + Vampire Volume 1

Manga Review: Rosario + Vampire Volume 1

1st volume of this charming series, follows average student Tsukune who after failing his high school entrance exams for every school in the human world, accidentally gets sent to Yokai Acadamy - a high school for monsters, where he is the only human and must hide the fact. In this volume, Tsukune meets the love of his life, vampire Moka, and her love rival, buxom succubus Kurumu. He fights off a band of killer mermaids, a werewolf and joins the school newspaper club. Fun story, super cute art-work.

Test (chapter) 3: Going clubbing, deals with Tsukune and Moka deciding which extra-curricular school club they want to join. Tsukune wants to join the swim club. He’s ok at swimming and wants to show off to Moka – plus seeing her in a bikini wouldn’t hurt. There are two big problems. Firstly vampires react badly to water because of its purification properties – so Moka can’t even enter the pool. Secondly the club president, Tamao Ichinose is a mermaid who wants to eat him.

The story plays out like all the other encounters in the manga - Tamao attacks Tsukune in the pool.

Moka dives in to save save him, even though it may well be fatal. Tsukune manages to rip the cross from around Moka's neck - she becomes her super vampire alter ego and trounces the mermaid in a mid air fight. One battered evil mermaid gives up and everyone else lives happily to fight another monster.

Evil flesh eating mermaids are reasonably common in Japanese manga. They are women, often depicted with green hair, fluked ears and razor sharp teeth - Here our mermaid can also transform at will into a bikini clad hottie.
As this is only a very short interlude in the saga, there isn't much mer action, though i do have to give a huge thumbs up for the mid air bitch fight which is really nicely done.

Verdict 5/10

Review: Sanctuary Season 1

Review: Sanctuary Season 1 (2008)

Sanctuary is one in a long line of supernatural TV shows, with a different creature focus each episode. Rather than hunting these abnormals however, a trained research team, led by Dr. Helen Magnus (Stargate's Amanda Tapping), capture creatures and offer them a refuge in 'The Sanctuary'. In the very first episode "Sanctuary for All" newcomer, police profiler Will Zimmerman gets a tour of the sanctuary and one of the first creatures he meets is the resident mermaid we later learn is nicknamed Sally. So far, so Hellboy... A female version of Abe anyone?

Sally has seaweed hair and a beautiful shimmering tail and lives in her own underwater environment - it's unclear the extent of her tank and indeed whether it is a tank or leads to open sea allowing her to come and go as she pleases. The first season offers very little mer content, despite mermaids being a feature of the opening credits:

The only thing we really learn is that merfolk are a peaceful race that live mainly in the Bermuda triangle. Oh and they have some level of telepathy. We learn absolutely nothing of Sally's history or how she came to be living at the sanctuary, something I'm crossing my fingers will be revealed in later seasons.

Other than the first double episode and the flash in the credits, the only other episode to feature mermaids is 1.9 "Requiem" - Sally sadly never makes an appearance, but we hear that she's received a distress call from her people and Helen & Will take a submarine to the Bermuda triangle to check it out.

When they arrive they find the grizzly remains of a merfolk massacre - bits of dead merfolk everywhere. They autopsy the torso and discover a parasite that causes the host to become violent and paranoid. Magnus gets infected and Will has to work out how to save them both, when all the parasite wants is to take the sub deeper and deeper...

Despite having hardly any actual mer content Requiem is an excellent episode and really chilling. It's also great to have another example to add to the list of mermaid horror - though here of course merfolk are the victims rather than the attackers. There's so much scope here for fan-fiction and back story - the outbreak from the mermaids POV. Or indeed the impact on the mercommunity. Magnus points out that about 100 died, which for such a small population is catastrophic.

Sanctuary is far from the best show in the supernatural field. However, it is entertaining enough and one of the few to have proper mermaid content. There isn't much in season 1, but I hope to see more in later seasons.

Verdict: 6/10
